LOCATION

WA Offshore Windfarm Project

The proposed offshore windfarm will be located approximately 5.5 km off the coast between Preston Beach and Binningup, 20 kms north of Bunbury, Western Australia.

The exact layout of the offshore windfarm, including the position of the turbines, is still to be designed. The Project Study Area (PSA) is around 156 sq km and this is where the majority of our site studies, including geotechnical, socio-economic and environmental investigations, will take place. The outcome of these investigations, as well as consultation with government, industry and local communities, will determine the project design. To download the PSA map click here.

Benefits

  • Clean renewable energy generation
  • Regional jobs created
  • Supporting clean manufacturing and export industries
  • Reduced emissions
  • Reduced energy costs

If constructed, it will have a generation capacity of up to 300 megawatts, enough to power more than 200,000 Western Australia homes.

The project will comprise up to 37 offshore wind turbine generators with supporting electrical resources to transfer energy generated by the windfarm to the existing electricity network.

The size of the individual wind turbines is yet to be determined.

It’s anticipated that each turbine will generate between 8 megawatts and 15 megawatts.

Why Offshore Wind?

Offshore wind energy in Australia is still in its formative stages but has the potential to play a key role, supporting renewable energy targets and the development of clean tech industries.

The offshore environment in Western Australia offers an opportunity to tap into a more powerful and consistent wind resource, with the potential to generate more electricity at a steadier rate than most other renewable energy sources.

The consistent, strong wind patterns offshore Western Australia provide tremendous opportunity to develop high capacity offshore wind-generated energy.

The area is also close to existing infrastructure that will enable effective connection to Western Australia's  South West Interconnector System (SWIS)  electrical grid.
